From protecting critical infrastructure to ensuring public safety, private security firms play a pivotal role in safeguarding communities and businesses alike. In 2024, one of Canada’s pioneering and largest private security companies, Securiguard Services Ltd., celebrates five decades dedicated to excellence, innovation, and unwavering commitment to security.

Established in 1971 as World Investigation Service by Stanley J. Kernaghan, the company initially ventured into security services in 1974, catalyzed by a significant contract with Cassiar Asbestos. This marked the beginning of a transformation that saw Securiguard grow from a small investigation firm into one of Canada’s leading private security providers. “Our journey over the past five decades has been nothing short of remarkable,” says Lorna Clamp, President of Securiguard Services Ltd. “From our humble beginnings as World Investigation Service to becoming one of Canada’s leading private security firms, our mission has always been clear: to safeguard communities, protect assets, and deliver unparalleled security solutions.”

Under the leadership of Darcy Kernaghan, Securiguard experienced notable shifts, particularly in 1997 when it assumed responsibilities of securing the primary security line at the Vancouver International Airport, previously managed by the RCMP. This milestone was a significant turning point, solidifying Securiguard’s reputation for handling high-level security operations. The success of this endeavour prompted other airport authorities across the nation to adopt this innovative model. Additionally, the company was entrusted with replacing the Ports Canada Police patrolling functions, during which it introduced its iconic high-visibility vehicles and uniforms.

Commitment to Innovation

Securiguard has consistently been a trailblazer in security innovation. The company has introduced several pioneering initiatives, including the first high-visibility yellow jacket, the establishment of the inaugural bicycle patrol, and becoming the premier private security company to attain ISO certification. These innovations have set new standards in the industry, enhancing both the effectiveness and visibility of security professionals.

Securiguard’s commitment to excellence is reflected in its rigorous training programs and the high standards it maintains for its personnel. “Our status as one of Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures, as recognized by Waterstone, really comes down to how we treat our people,” says Clamp. “It’s something we take to heart. We’ve always believed that the success of Securiguard is built on the relationships we have with our team members and our commitment to ensuring they have the support needed to succeed.”

Securiguard focuses on providing employees with meaningful benefits and genuine opportunities for growth, ensuring they have real chances for advancement and personal development. “Training and recognition are essential to helping our employees progress. Even during the pandemic, we quickly pivoted and adapted our operations without sacrificing our commitment to our team’s well-being,” adds Clamp. This emphasis on employee development and well-being has been a cornerstone of Securiguard’s success, fostering a motivated and dedicated workforce.

The company’s recognition by Waterstone as one of Canada’s Most Admired Cultures in 2022 and 2023 underscores its commitment to its team and values. “It’s these moments that remind us of our impact and the responsibilities we carry,” adds Clamp.

Strengthening Community Ties

Securiguard’s is also defined by a deep-rooted commitment to community engagement and social responsibility. “A key aspect of our mission has been our successful collaboration with over 26 Indigenous communities across Canada, focused on breaking down the barriers to Indigenous employment, enhancing Indigenous procurement opportunities, and strengthening community ties,” says Clamp. These partnerships exemplify Securiguard’s commitment to fostering inclusive relationships and contributing to economic empowerment within the communities it serves. Over the past ten years Securiguard is proud to have shared 16 million dollars in revenue with the Indigenous communities we are partnered with, and employed over 700 individuals of Indigenous decent.

In 2021, Securiguard acquired Russell Security Services, aligning with Securiguard’s national growth strategy. With branches in Toronto and Barrie, Russell Security was the perfect opportunity to grow in the Ontario market. With recent expansion in London and Ottawa we look forward to future growth in the province.

Looking ahead, Securiguard remains focused on continuing its legacy of Making People Feel Safe. “In the next 5-10 years, we envision a future defined by continued growth, innovation, and social impact,” states Clamp. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering communities, protecting lives, and making a meaningful difference in the communities we serve.”

Embracing Technological Advancements

In recent years, Securiguard has embraced the digital age with a robust portfolio of technology-driven solutions. The integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics into security operations has enhanced the company’s ability to predict and prevent security breaches—for instance, AI-powered surveillance systems can detect unusual activities in real-time, while data analytics helps in identifying potential risks and vulnerabilities.

“It’s been an incredible journey of growth and adaptation,” says Clamp. “We’ve witnessed pivotal moments, from securing critical Infrastructure projects to expanding our footprint across Canada. Our ability to evolve and innovate has been integral to our success.” This resilience and adaptability have been key drivers of Securiguard’s sustained success over the past five decades.

From its early days as World Investigation Service to its current status as an industry leader, Securiguard is well-positioned to continue its mission of protecting people, property, and assets with the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. Here’s to the next 50 years of success and growth for Securiguard Services Ltd.
