Simplicity and richness: the guiding principles that create a tension between the super and the ordinary and at the core of Montreal-based architecture firm Archi-, whose unique approach and to architecture is gaining National attention.
A Vision of Innovation and Simplicity
Archi- (formerly known as CGA architectes) has come a long way since its inception in 1995. With nearly 50 dedicated employees and a dynamic leadership team, the company boasts a portfolio of projects that spans various scales and complexities. The partners of Archi-, including Cédric Boulet, Pierre Corriveau, Sylvie Girard, Daniel Lapalme, and Charles-Antoine Perrault, envisioned an approach to architecture that breaks free from predefined styles and instead focuses on creating tailored solutions that best serve the client’s needs and context.
Archi- refers to its process as “straightforwardism”, which is finding the architectural approach that appears most obvious, “one that will generate a clear idea that will guide every design decision,” says Charles-Antoine Perreault, Architect, Partner. “We then work to optimize our design by reducing architectural gestures to arrive at a project that relies on the essentials: spacial quality and optimal functionality.”
The result is architecture that gets right to the point. Archi- also champions the concept of “SuperOrdinary” architecture, where simplicity and thoughtfulness combine for a unique architectural experience. “This strategy creates a contrast between the apparent simplicity of the project and the richness of the experience, hence the tension created between the super and the ordinary,” explain the partners.
Optimistic Sobriety
Defined by Archi- as “having a positive outlook on achieving a truly enjoyable living space with an economy of means,” Optimistic Sobriety is at the heart of Archi-’s philosophy. “We believe that simplification and reduction are creative processes that allow us emphasizing what genuinely matters to the user and address sustainability challenges in a unique way,” says Archi-. While its primary focus lies within the healthcare and institutional sphere, the firm also actively participates in residential and commercial sectors. The adaptability of its design approach and the breadth of its project portfolio are key defining elements of its identity.
The Archi- team is proud of its ability to adapt quickly to an everchanging construction industry. Sustainability has become an imperative in modern architecture, and Archi- prioritizes reduction in built areas, material use, and energy expended during construction to reduce the environmental footprint of their projects.
“Economy of means is an integral part of our architectural philosophy and is now an imperative for any sustainable construction approach,” explain Archi-. “Our approach follows this line of thinking. It involves maximizing the reuse of existing elements, studying the orientation, optimizing natural sunlight and the performance of the envelope to minimize the ecological impact of the project.”
Additionally, there has been a shift in the architectural landscape from the “starchitect” model to a more humble and community-oriented approach. Archi- is at the forefront of this transformation, focusing on integrated design and a collaborative approach that responds to the needs of the clients, users and community.
A New Identity: Archi-
Formerly known as CGA, the firm changed its named to Archi- in 2023 to better represent its mission, founded on timelessness and the strength of the collective. The name Archi- is designed to be unifying, reflecting their commitment to uniting clients, partners, and users in the realization of comprehensive projects that respect needs, context, and the environment.
“We consider the team an integral part of the firm’s identity. After multiple collective brainstorming sessions, Archi- emerged as the most logical choice,” says Perreault. “For decades, archi.ca was the web and email address of CGA architectes, and so Archi- was already a part of our identity and our culture.”
The “hyphen” in Archi- represents their collaborative approach, aiming to bridge the gaps and create a cohesive team that works together to deliver meaningful projects. “Archi- is not just a name; it’s a word that represents all of us. Its generic nature makes it easily relatable and adaptable, reflecting their commitment to timeless design.”
Looking forward, Archi- looks to strengthen and expand its in-house expertise, and looks to further cementing its role in Quebec architecture. “Our strategy includes gradual company growth, enabling us to effectively tackle meaningful and sizable projects, all while remaining unwavering in our dedication to our vision and maintaining a warm, team-oriented office atmosphere.”
