As Canada’s national public broadcaster and one of its largest cul-
tural institutions, CBC/Radio-Canada is a beacon of news, enter-
tainment, and information. The Maison de Radio-Canada (MRC) is
moving homes to a new, state-of-the-art building that will reflect the
broadcaster’s stature in Canadian culture, and usher in a new era
of digital communication. And as with the architecture, the neigh-
bourhood will be reflective of the times, with an integrative urban
renewal plan that will frame a new gateway to Montreal’s east end.
Boutique mechanical electrical firmDupras Ledoux were brought on
board the Maison de Radio Canada project. A natural fit for the project, the Quebec-based company
is known for creative approaches to complex electrical mechanical design, and walked us through
the CBC project from the inside.
Large infrastructure plans are a theme to this issue, as we have no shortage of incredible projects
to share with you. The most unique has to be Edmonton’s Mechanized River Valley Access Project.
As the name implies, the city is constructing a $24 million mechanized funicular and elevator sys-
tem down to its river valley park system—the country’s largest urban park. Montreal’s Champlain
Bridge Renewal project is the largest infrastructure in this issue, at close to $4 billion. The new
bridge will accommodate the 40 million cars that cross annually, maintaining the vital trade cor-
ridor between Canada and the U.S.
The projects within this issue represent a thousand of new jobs for Canadians, and thousands of
more spin-off jobs. It’s been a pleasure speaking with the men and women behind some of Canada’s
biggest legacy projects, and we hope you enjoy hearing their stories as well.
