played a significant role in
overall design decisions. “We
can change designs and try
and find the best solutions
for the building for what the
hospital needs,” says Tammy
Leung.
As part of their contract, El-
lisDon has committed to a
30-year financial and mainte-
nance arrangement with Way-
point. And because of this
long-term investment into the
hospital, the materials used
on the building are meant
for longevity rather than cost
effectiveness. “We have to
think long term on every de-
cision we make,” says Leggio.
“The question of durability is
always at the forefront of our
minds as opposed to choos-
ing the cheapest materials.
We are always choosing the
materials providing us with
the most value.”
Despite its scenic view over-
looking Georgian Bay, be-
ginning construction on the
site was no easy task. Leggio
says that connecting the new
development to two existing
buildings was quite the chal-
lenge because of the ground
field site. And with a fast-
paced schedule, ensuring that
the dry wall met all the re-
quirements also proved to be
a difficult learning curb.
“We had a bin model that we
used to sort out a lot of the
inter ferences so we had full
integration from the mechani-
cal, electrical, and structural
sense to deal with inter fer-
ences to keep things moving
as smoothly as possible,” says
Leggio.
For both Leggio and Leung,
being a part of such a great
team was well worth the
rough patches. “What was
most satisfying to me was
