The victory of Philippe
Couillard’s Liberals over Pau-
line Marois’ Parti Quebecois
means great things for Que-
bec, apart from the removal
of the risk of separation ref-
erendum or the removal of a
headgear ban. It means that
Quebec is well on its way to
charting a booming mining in-
dustry.
The resource sector will
see an acceleration of a mas-
sive mining development
in northern Quebec, and so
much as 72% of Quebec’s
land will be transformed over
the next 25 years. The devel-
opment, called Plan Nord,
was originally introduced in
May 2011 by Former Premier
Jean Charest. It was expected
to create 20, 000 jobs annu-
ally as well as generating over
$80 billion over a 25- year pe-
riod.
